** Talking Points Ideas For PSAs
Below are a variety of suggested talking points and an example video of each that you can use to help create your PSA. Use these to get ideas for your own PSA!

Learn the Facts.

With proper and factual knowledge people can make better informed decisions. The facts about opioids may surprise some people and help them to seek treatment or help! See the facts page for information!

Example: “Did you know that opioid dependency is a medical issue and not a choice?” Let’s #talkaboutit

Addiction is a Disease

Many people think it is the user’s fault and that they choose to be addicted. That creates shame in the user. If more people know the fact that addiction is a medical issue, more people would seek help.

Example: “Imagine if you broke your leg but were too embarrassed to go to a doctor? Well addiction is a medical issue and like a broken leg can be treated!” #talkaboutit

You are Not Alone!

Many people feel like they are the only one suffering or that understands the struggle. The truth is that many more people suffer that admit. If people knew that they were not alone and had resources and people to talk to they would be more likely to seek help.

Example: “It may feel like you have nobody to talk to, but the truth is, right here in Delaware there are people just like you struggling. There are also many who have successfully stopped using. You are not alone” #talkaboutit

Addiction is Not a Choice

People judge others who struggle with addiction and place blame. Many people who end up mis-using and abusing opioids started with an innocent entry by being prescribed pain killers from a doctor. If we accept that its not a choice, we can get more people supporting helpful initiatives instead of creating shame.

Example: “Nobody says when they want to grow up they want to be addicted to drugs. Nobody chooses addiction.” #talkaboutit

SPEAK HEALTH: Change our Language

The words we say can have a big impact on how people feel about something. If the words we use make people feel shame or blame, they will not seek treatment due to embarrassment. We can suggest a change in language to destigmatize the issue and get more people to help.

Example: “Instead of saying junkie, say a person misusing opioids because words matter! No one will ask you for help if you judge them with mean words like Junkie!” #talkaboutit

Tell a Story.

Do you have a personal story of someone that you know that was addicted? Personal stories get people’s attention and help them learn through other people’s experiences.

Example: “My cousin became addicted to painkillers after he had back surgery. He never took a drug in his life but still ended up addicted. It can happen to anyone.”

Get Help.

We want those who are ready to get help to know where and how to do so! We have created a facts and resource page with information on where to get help.

Example: “If you are suffering, you can get help! Go to talkaboutitde.com to learn where and how to get help!
